The Geology of Defiance is what saved my life when the world tried to break me. In my career as a mineral engineer, I learned that some of the toughest materials are formed under the most intense pressure. My own life followed the same rules. The Geology of Defiance was born during my battle with breast cancer and a difficult divorce. It was that stubborn, rocky part of my soul that refused to give up, even when the tectonic shifts of my life felt like they were destroying everything I knew.
People often think of defiance as something negative, but in soul geology, it is a protective layer. It is the grit that allows you to survive the erosion of your confidence. This inner strength is what led me to leave my past behind and find true love at 45 in the heart of Paris. I realized that my “inat” — my defiance — was actually my spirit’s way of ensuring my survival. It taught me that I could be both a survivor and a woman capable of deep, peaceful love.
If you are facing a wall today, remember that you are made of ancient, resilient stardust. Use your own version of The Geology of Defiance to push through the obstacles. Do not apologize for your strength or your stubbornness. These are the qualities that allow you to rebuild your landscape and find your Malachite Peace. You are not a victim of your circumstances; you are the engineer of your destiny, and your prkos (defiance) is your greatest tool for transformation.

The Geology of Defiance: I Survived Cancer to Finally Find True Love
In mineralogy engineering, gold is never found in peaceful, untouched rocks sleeping beneath the sun. It is sought where the earth has bled, where tectonic plates have scraped against each other for millennia until everything turned to dust and scorching magma. My personal “gold vein” was not born in the peace of Parisian streets; it was born the moment I, stripped bare by illness in a cold hospital bed, made the most important decision of my life.
Many say that in the moments between life and death, as you stare at the white hospital ceiling, you think about the past. I didn’t. My past was a ten-year sedimentation of ice—a marriage that looked like solid granite on the outside but was corroded by betrayal and lies on the inside. Out of that icy siege, I emerged as cold as ice. I remember the moment of leaving: he was astonished, caught off guard by my calmness, while I was already a geologically formed rock, immovable in my decision to finally seek the love I deserve.
And then, like a bolt from the blue, just as I had begun to breathe the air of freedom—breast cancer.
Lying in that bed, faced with a diagnosis that threatened to turn me to dust, I felt something stronger than fear. I felt a vital defiance. The thought that brought me the most peace was absurdly defiant: I did not leave the deceit and tear down my old world in Canada just to give up now, here, in silence.
I survived because I refused to let my misfortune become someone else’s victory.
I will survive this because I have to prove—to myself, to the universe, and to the one who betrayed me—that true love exists and that there is room in this world for my happiness too. That defiance wasn’t bitterness; it was my medicine, my inner magma that burned away the cells of fear.
Today, as I run through the streets of Paris or visit chateaus that defy time, my internal landscape no longer recognizes the old map of pain. Here, in a country where the architecture breathes with the same lungs as I do, I am the gold in the river. Paris isn’t just a backdrop; it is the catalyst for my new alchemy. Every “Bonjour” I exchange with a passerby, every morning spent in my living room writing poetry, every jog through the young, awakening spring green—these are all my little triumphs. I don’t compare myself to others because everyone is running their own race, and in mine, I have already won.
The Dignity of Forgiveness
Women often ask me: “Sanja, how do you achieve that saving coldness toward the person who hurt you without becoming a bitter, petrified person?” The secret lies in the dignity of forgiveness. It is the hardest mineralogical operation—separating a pure heart from the barren rock of anger. You do not forgive for their sake; you forgive for your own “Malachite Peace.”
Bitterness is an acid that eats away at your health, and after everything I have been through, my health is my sacred temple. When you become truly peaceful, you become untouchable. Your misfortune would have been their food—so deny them that meal and bloom instead.
My “Gold Standard” today is no longer engineering projects in Vancouver. My success is the warmth of the coffee in my kitchen and the moment my husband walks past me while I write, kisses me, and whispers: “My God, you are beautiful.” In that moment, I know I am the most beautiful to him, just as he is the most beautiful gift life has given to my soul and body as a reward for all the pressure I endured.
Be calm, be yourself, and be there for yourself, just as my mother told me in the darkest days: “Be strong for us.”Today I add—be strong for yourself, because your story doesn’t end with a tectonic shift. Only then, from that burning, sincere depth, does it begin to shine.
