Salt on the Skin is the feeling of a new beginning by the ocean. In this episode, I share the story of a Vancouver wedding and building a life from scratch. It was a time of hope, but also a time of hidden shifts. As a Soul Geologist, I know that salt can heal, but it also stings. This journey eventually led to a sudden return to Split.

You can support my writing and buy me a coffee on Ko-fi. My full story of resilience is available on my Amazon Author Page. Feeling the salt on the skin means being alive and present.

No, ovaj put, taj teret nije bio težak.
Dvije godine živjeli smo svoj kanadski san, onaj pravi, miran i stabilan. On je našao posao, ja sam imala svoj mir. A onda… onaj sudbinski poziv koji svaki iseljenik potajno sanja i od kojeg strepi. Moja mama.

Episode 9: Salt on the Skin — A Wedding at the Edge of the World

“As the Pacific wind carried salt onto our skin, we promised fidelity on the ruins of my past. The city that once suffocated me with betrayal was now just the backdrop for our shared happiness.”
— Magma Star
Returning to Vancouver after Paris was like re-entering the mine, but this time with a lamp that never goes out. After five days of Parisian magic, museums, and walks along the Seine, I left first. I had to prepare the ground. I found an apartment, I found a job in a laboratory making optical lenses—I was looking at the world through glass again, but this time the picture was crystal clear.
Six months later, he landed. My new beginning in human form.
We got married right on the shore of the ocean. There were no hundreds of guests, no fake glamour. There were only my two loyal friends, women who had seen my fall into the abyss and my slow, painful reconstruction. We started from zero: second-hand furniture, a second-hand car, the paperwork for his work permit. But this time, that burden was not heavy.
For two years we lived our Canadian dream, the real one, calm and stable. He found a job, I had my peace. And then… that fateful call every expat secretly dreams of and dreads. My mom. A stroke.
In geology, the magnetic field sometimes suddenly flips. My compass needle turned toward Split in a single second. Without thinking, I got on the first plane.
My husband, the man who left his Paris for me, proved his true mineral strength: he sold everything we had acquired in those two years and followed me to Dalmatia. We didn’t go there looking for happiness; we went there to be love and a shield to the one who first taught me what it means to belong.
Vancouver was the site of my greatest defeat, but also of my purest victory. We left the ocean behind to return to the sea that created me.
