Five Kilometers of Truth is a story about the small moments that define our boundaries. For years, as an engineer, I followed plans and protocols without question. But that morning, a simple walk turned into a profound lesson in choosing myself. This reflection, Five Kilometers of Truth, explores why we sometimes silence our own needs to avoid hurting others. I realized that saying “I will walk home” is not an act of selfishness; it is an act of self-care.
True strength is found in the small sentences we say out loud. As I shared in my previous post, Time That Came Too Late, silence can often lead to regret. By understanding the message behind these Five Kilometers of Truth, we learn to create a healthy space between ourselves and our loved ones. To learn more about the importance of setting boundaries in relationships, you can read about personal boundaries and self-care. Below, I invite you to reflect on your own “five kilometers” and the importance of choosing yourself without guilt.
Pet kilometara istine
Nije me spriječio on.
To nije odbacivanje. To nije bunt.
Five Kilometers of Truth
I hadn’t gone out for a brisk walk in two days. I didn’t feel like it. But that morning I felt something different — I really wanted to go. I dressed for jogging with that quiet sense of pride in choosing myself. My husband said we would go together, as usual. We set off. After a few steps, he told me to slow down. I asked why. He replied that he wasn’t dressed appropriately.
Only then did I realize — the plan was to drive to the store, five kilometers there and back. I had assumed we were walking. I didn’t ask. I didn’t check. We went back. We got into the car.
In that moment, I could have said: “You go by car, I’ll walk.” The idea crossed my mind while he was in the store. I could have walked home alone. It would have been perfect. Fresh air. Silence. The feeling that I fulfilled what I promised myself. But I said nothing.
At first glance — a trifle. But for me, it wasn’t. Because I realized something important: the problem wasn’t that we went by car. The problem was that I didn’t voice my desire. He didn’t stop me. I stopped myself — out of fear of hurting him, of seeming selfish. And the truth is simple: wanting to walk is not selfishness. It is self-care.
I realized that true strength is not shown in big dramas. It is shown in small sentences spoken on time. “I’ll walk.” It’s not rejection. It’s not rebellion. It is a healthy space between two people. Those five kilometers I didn’t walk are not a defeat. They are a lesson.
Next time I feel the desire, I will say it. It might feel uncomfortable. But I will say it. Because those five kilometers are not just walking. It is a path towards choosing myself without guilt.
